Junior Software Engineer

Cambridge, GB
GB

Software AG began its journey in 1969, the year that technology helped put a man on the moon and the software industry was born. We’re passionate about software, passionate about our people, and passionate about using technology to create truly world-class products.

You’ve probably used our software - if you live on planet Earth. The name “Software AG” may never appear on your online banking screen, your sweet wrapper or the cup from your barista. You may never see “Software AG” in the movie’s credits, on your mouse or on the side of the plane you just flew —but our software is virtually everywhere.

The fact is leading brands use Software AG technology every day to serve you better. Leading organizations trust us. One reason: We’re driven by customer success. We are the pulse that keeps the world living and thriving.

About the job

Located in our 35-person office on the St John's Innovation Park (near Cambridge North railway station), we have two positions available in two different teams! We're looking for great people, so whether you're a graduate or you have a couple of years commercial experience, we'd love to hear from you! Whatever level of experience you have at the moment, you'll be able to make a real contribution at Software AG, and have plenty of chances to grow:

If you're joining our team fresh out of university, Software AG will give you experience of writing robust commercial-quality, high performance code and testcases in a variety of languages. You'll be part of an agile development team, learn new skills as needed and have the chance to pick up best practices and tips from our seasoned developers. In our teams everyone's ideas are valued - right from your first day with us - and everyone is encouraged to contribute to design discussions, documentation, code reviews, our public community and shaping how we work.

Your responsibilities in this role will include software architecture, design, development, documentation, and testing. You will be working day-to-day on different projects within your agile team and interacting regularly with Software AG colleagues around the world.

Additional benefits include: innovation/hack weeks, community engagement initiatives, a fun office environment with flexible “hybrid” working, at least 50 hours of dedicated time each year for learning/training, a competitive salary and a generous benefits package including pension, childcare vouchers and medical insurance.

Cumulocity IoT

The Cumulocity IoT platform, the core of Software AG’s Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) offering, empowers our users to easily build applications that connect millions of distributed devices and allow these to be managed, monitored and their sensor data analysed.

Cumulocity can be deployed in public clouds, private data centres and single node edge-of-network environments, integrated with other products from the Software AG family such as the Apama streaming analytics engine and the Zementis AI/ML framework. Cumulocity IoT applications can analyse the data from connected devices – everything from manufacturing robots to wind turbines to delivery trucks – in real time and automatically act to unlock the value in that data, for example by detecting an impending failure and triggering the repair before the robot or turbine breaks down.

The Cumulocity team in Cambridge works on many different aspects of the core Cumulocity platform, with a focus on performance, scalability, robustness and end-to-end quality. We also work on remote management, security and other features of Cumulocity Edge. That means there will always be a variety of different projects that you can get involved with.

About you

You will be a recent graduate or someone with up to 1-2 years of experience in the software industry looking for a new challenge.  Usually we expect candidates to have a 2:1 or 1st class degree in a relevant subject such as computer science or software engineering.  If you studied something different but have the relevant commercial development experience, or experience working on public open-source projects, we’d still be keen to talk to you.

Our primary development languages is Java (8 and 11) so we expect you to have strong and up-to-date knowledge. We use Python 3 extensively in our test and build frameworks and Rust for some Cumulocity Edge development. All our projects involve multiple programming languages and other tools, so we expect you to be able to learn new languages quickly with the support of the rest of your team.

You should have some knowledge of back-end/server-side/systems programming topics such as distributed systems, multi-threading, memory and performance optimization, and ideally also some interest in front end web technologies.

We also value experience in any of the other technologies and processes we use: Agile development processes such as Scrum or Kanban; DevOps and CI/CD concepts and best practices; testing approaches like TDD or BDD, and frameworks such as Cucumber, PySys or JUnit; technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, HTTP/REST, Spring Boot, MQTT, Apache Karaf or Apache Pulsar; or any prior experience with the Internet of Things.

That’s just to give a flavour – everyone on team brings their own unique contribution and we’re certainly not expecting anyone to tick every box!

We love to hear from people who’ve created or contributed to some opensource projects (e.g. GitHub) or done some blogging.

Most importantly, you should be friendly, conscientious, able to communicate clearly, and passionate about continually improving your skills and knowledge.
