Site Reliability Engineer

The Site Reliability Engineer is expected to work independently with little to no guidance, to be able to identify and raise questions proactively, and to think long-term, or “big picture”.  The ideal candidate will also have extensive knowledge of public cloud(s) and the ability to assess the consequences of decisions, using that assessment to determine whether a decision can be taken independently or if it should be discussed with other members of the team, management, or stakeholders.

 

Job Responsibilities


Operate and evolve various services targeted at internal Software AG customers by:

  • Offering great user experience by ensuring high availability and performance of our services
  • Implementing tooling to automate repetitive operation tasks and increase operational excellence
  • Gathering and analyzing metrics and deriving concrete actions for further service improvement
  • Create sustainable systems and services through automation

Partner with software development teams, and

  • Consult on building reliable, scalable, distributed applications in the cloud
  • Support in design consulting, capacity planning, performance tuning and fault analysis while ensuring proper architecture and security
  • Assess decisions to decide if task(s) can be taken independently or discussed with team, managers, or other stakeholders

Serve as a role model for team by:

  • Work independently with little guidance, as well as identifying and raising problems pro-actively
  • Assessing the consequences of decisions and use that to decide whether a decision can be taken independently or should be discussed with the team or should be discussed with the manager or other stakeholders
  • Mentoring, guiding, and structuring work for lower-level engineers on the team

 

Job Requirements

  • Bachelors or Master's degree in computer science, electronics, or engineering or similar work experience
  • 5+ years of experience in site reliability
  • Ability to program (structured and OO) with one or more languages, such as Python, Go, Rust Java
  • Extensive knowledge about one of the big Hyperscalers, as well as the public Cloud
  • Proven knowledge in sizing and cost management of cloud services
  • Experience with infrastructure as code, containerization, and deployment / development toolchains
  • Experience with the software development lifecycle: requirement specification, dynamic testing and static analysis, and how to version, deploy, and release software
  • Knowledge of software quality characteristics and how they are measured
  • A proactive approach to spotting problems, areas for improvement, and performance bottlenecks
  • An open and result oriented communication and working style
  • Experience working in a worldwide global multicultural environment
  • Ability to adapt communication(s) to diverse audience(s)
  • Fluent in spoken and written English language
